The ultrastructural analysis of sperm and the relationship between its structure and function are key drivers in evolutionary processes and are paramount for male fertility and infertility. Sperm concentration, morphology, motility, and other routinely evaluated semen parameters are critical to determining male reproductive potential. However, there are still some subjects with normal semen parameter values in current laboratory practice who are unable to conceive. There may be ultrastructural alterations, and accurately describing sperm morphology is required. EM enables the visualization of the internal structures and the analysis of the different organelles characterizing sperm defects.

Our TEM analysis can assist researchers to study multiple morphological sperm defects, including systematic (monomorphic) sperm defects, rarely combined sperm defects with a possible genetic basis, and non-systematic (polymorphic) sperm defects.
