Sperm Imaging Using the iEM Platform
The structural studies on sperm morphology are the basis for understanding sperm physiology and pathology. Electron microscopy(EM) is a powerful tool for exploring the morphology of sperm as well as the structure and function of different sperm organelles. Creative Biostructure is able to provide multiple advanced EM methods to support customers' needs for sperm imaging and analysis.
Importance of Sperm Ultrastructure Analysis
The ultrastructural analysis of sperm and the relationship between its structure and function are key drivers in evolutionary processes and are paramount for male fertility and infertility. Sperm concentration, morphology, motility, and other routinely evaluated semen parameters are critical to determining male reproductive potential. However, there are still some subjects with normal semen parameter values in current laboratory practice who are unable to conceive. There may be ultrastructural alterations, and accurately describing sperm morphology is required. EM enables the visualization of the internal structures and the analysis of the different organelles characterizing sperm defects.
Sperm Imaging at the iEM Platform
Evaluate sperm morphology
Sperm characterization for basic research
Identify morphological sperm defects
Our integrated EM platform is equipped with advanced EM technologies, including transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and enhanced scanning electron microscopy(SEM). We have accurate and fast sperm ultrastructural imaging and analysis capabilities, involving external sperm morphology, internal sperm morphology, and full cell 3D reconstruction.
EM technology plays an important role in basic and translational research in biology and reproductive medicine through ultrastructural analysis of sperm. We can apply TEM to investigate morphological changes of sperm treatedwith different compounds in vitro for various purposes.
It is well known that morphological sperm defects may be one of the reasons leading to the decline of sperm fertilization ability, which has special research value in the field of male infertility. EM, especially TEM, is probably the best method to study ultrastructural sperm anomalies, such as sperm head defects, neck defects, and tail defects. Our TEM analysis can assist researchers to study multiple morphological sperm defects, including systematic (monomorphic) sperm defects, rarely combined sperm defects with a possible genetic basis, and non-systematic (polymorphic) sperm defects. In addition, our ultrastructural analysis can also characterize new sperm defects.
